Self & Other is attempting to
articulate a view of life from the deepest possible level.
It is a theory that puts individuals at the core of existence.
It is the viewpoint that you and I are non-physical beings
with the capacity to relate to each other by choice,
and that life is an artifact or side-effect of our interaction.
This is quite a stretch for most
people, but after the initial surprises, it begins to make sense.
Here are the basic assumptions that we work with:
- You exist - you absolutely are.
- You are ability - you can originate something right from your
self. You start things. What you do is not just mechanical stimulus/response.
You are an actual source, right down to the metaphysical level.
- You are an individual (as in "in-divide-able) - you are
not made of pieces or parts. You are just one thing. You cannot be divided.
- You are conscious - this is self-evident. What is this consciousness?
From the perspective of Self & Other, consciousness is the contact
between you and an "other."
- There are others - just as you exist, so do others.
- Another is equivalent to you - what you are, that is what another
is.
- Life is the evolving relationship between individuals - we existed
(in some way) from the beginning of time. Our relationship has evolved,
from less related to more related, through our choice to do that.
- Love is realizing another.
